Can I really use the self-hosted version free forever?
Yes. The full server is open and you run it on your own Ubuntu box. The hosted tiers exist for people who don't want to operate the stack themselves.
What happens when messages reach the retention limit?
They're auto-deleted by a TTL index. You can configure retention globally or per mailbox. Self-hosted has no enforced limit.
Can I switch tiers later?
Yes. Upgrades take effect immediately. Downgrades take effect at the end of the billing cycle.
What counts as an inbox?
One email address with a password. Plus-sign aliases (user+x@) don't count as separate inboxes.
